Due to what has been called an _epidemic_ of youth use of these products, FDA has prioritized prevention efforts. The agency has taken a multitude of actions to keep ENDS out of the hands of youth, from policy making to enforcement to education. While e-cigarettes can generally be a lower-risk alternative for adults who smoke cigarettes, the use of e-cigarettes is not risk-free. These products deliver harmful chemicals and contain nicotine, which is highly addictive. Moreover, given the harmful chemicals found in e-cigarettes, further high-quality research on both short- and long-term health outcomes is needed. The longer ENDS and other e-cigarettes are on the market, the more information we know about their impacts on health.

The harmful effects of CS and their deleterious consequences are both well recognised and widely investigated. However, and based on the studies carried out so far, it seems that e-cigarette consumption is less toxic than tobacco smoking. This does not necessarily mean, however, that e-cigarettes are free from hazardous effects. Indeed, studies investigating their long-term effects on human health are urgently required. Before this study _ which Truth Initiative funded _ there hasn_t been any data available on how to help teens quit vaping, according to the researchers. In many high and middle income countries lower socioeconomic status is a strong predictor of smoking. In North America, the common name for the remains of a cigarette after smoking is a cigarette butt. In Britain, it is also called a fag-end or a dog-end.[44] The butt is typically about 30% of the cigarette's original length. It consists of a tissue tube which holds a filter and some remains of tobacco mixed with ash. According to data from the World Health Organization,[39] the amount of tobacco per 1000 cigarettes fell from 1.03 kg (2.28 pounds) in 1960 to 0.41 kg (0.91 pounds) in 1999, largely as a result of reconstituting tobacco, fluffing, and additives. The epidemic use of e-cigarettes is a complicated problem which requires a cooperative effort between partners, organizations, and communities.

More people began vaping in 2023 than initiated alcohol or illicit substances. A 2015 study suggests that people who vape nicotine are more likely to become dependent on nicotine than people who vape nicotine-free fluids. Vaping might appear to be a less harmful choice for people trying to quit smoking. However, that doesn_t mean there aren_t risks involved, even if the vape liquid is nicotine-free. For instance, a 2018 study reported that exposure to e-cigarette aerosol makes teeth surfaces more prone to developing bacteria.
More research needs to be done to understand the long-term health effects of secondhand exposure to e-cigarette vapor. Secondhand exposure to e-cigarette vapor is said to be less toxic than secondhand exposure to cigarette smoke. However, secondhand vapor is still a form of air pollution that probably poses health risks. Beginning August 1, 2019, Minnesota law prohibits the use of these products indoors where cigarette use is prohibited, including bars and restaurants. A 2021 study found that daily e-cigarette usage among tobacco smokers can increase the likelihood of quitting smoking eightfold. Researchers assessed data from the 2014ｭ_2019 Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study, focusing on smokers who were not planning to quit smoking at the start of the period. However, a 2019 study into the long-term health effects of vaping found that people using e-cigarettes had a higher risk of respiratory disease than people who never smoked. The authors first created a comprehensive database of tobacco product flavor prohibition and restriction laws across the United States, including both state and local statutes.
